Tuya or Shelly?

Both work with Optimaatti — the choice depends on your situation. This page helps you decide which one suits you better.

Choose Tuya if you already have devices

Tuya or Smart Life is the right choice when you already have smart devices at home and want to connect them to Optimaatti quickly.

  • Your devices are already in the Tuya or Smart Life app — no need to buy anything new.
  • Connection takes about 5 minutes and requires no technical knowledge.
  • Works through a cloud service — requires an internet connection.

Choose Shelly if you are starting fresh

Shelly is the right choice when you are buying a new device specifically for electricity optimization, for example for a water heater or heating.

  • Direct connection without cloud service — works even without internet.
  • Best choice for water heaters, heating, and other large loads.
  • Requires physical installation (electrician recommended), but runs automatically after that.

The simplest rule of thumb

If you already have Tuya or Smart Life devices, start with Tuya. If you are buying a new device specifically for electricity optimization, choose Shelly.

What if the internet goes down?

Tuya devices require an internet connection because control goes through a cloud service. Shelly devices work locally on your WiFi network even without internet. If reliability is important (e.g. heating control), Shelly is the safer choice.

Can I use both at the same time?

Yes! Optimaatti supports multiple device types simultaneously. For example, you can control your water heater with Shelly and your living room lights with Tuya. All devices appear in the same device list.

When is Tuya usually the better first step?
